About Reuters AlertNet

Reuters AlertNet logoAlertNet provides global news, communications and logistics services to the interReuters AlertNet is a humanitarian news network based around a popular website. It aims to keep relief professionals and the wider public up-to-date on humanitarian crises around the globe. AlertNet attracts upwards of three million users a year, has a network of more than three hundred contributing humanitarian organizations and its weekly email digest is received by more than 10,000 readers.

AlertNet has won a Popular Communication award for technological innovation, a NetMedia European Online Journalism Award for its coverage of natural disasters and has been named a Millennium Product by the British Government -- an award for outstanding applications of innovative technologies.

What they wanted

The AlertNet team already had a Content Management System but were frustrated by the cost of adding new functionality and the high maintenance and hosting fees. They wanted a new system created for them in open source, to enable both in-house and external development teams, to be able add functionality efficiently in terms of both time and cost. They also wanted a long term relationship with a supplier they could trust to keep abreast of new technologies but, more importantly, deliver on time and to budget.

How we responded

Having taken the requirements, both verbal and written, we were able to deliver the initial platform in a matter of weeks on our own open source system. The timing could not have been more critical as the launch phase coincided with the start of the Iraq crisis and the Wrenhill team worked both day and night to ensure delivery on time. We also worked with Reuters’ own staff who were to host the systems in house. In the event, Wrenhill actually installed and configured the servers and operating systems in situ to facilitate the launch.

The easy ability to contribute content to the Alertnet services was of paramount importance, because of the small team dedicated to this function. Understanding their needs was hugely important. Taking the Reuters news feeds directly onto the home page, including both timestamps and story ageing, is one example of how this was achieved. In the meantime, Wrenhill are now working with a third external partner of AlertNet to provide satellite images on the site, as well as with in-house programmers in the US providing additional functionality to this extremely valuable service. The AlertNet story just keeps getting better and Wrenhill are extremely proud to be the technical team at the heart of this innovative and forward-thinking organisation.
