About CITB/bconstructive
The CITB (Construction Industry Training Board) is a government organisation that provides assistance in all aspects of recruiting, training and qualifying the construction workforce. CITB also work with partners in industry and government to improve the competitiveness of the industry as a whole. bconstructive is the brand of the CITB to appeal specifically to teenagers, to provide information and resources about working in the construction industry.
What they wanted CITB wanted to launch a new site for young people. The site needed to contain comprehensive careers information as well as some new features like up-to-date news, visitor polls, quizzes and games, all delivered within a four-week deadline to fit the advertising campaign! The team needed a new system that would be extremely cost efficient and have certain elements that were to be managed directly by the CITB or their partner organisations. The use of simple secure web forms needing no technical expertise at all, other than the ability to use a web browser; to update the site was key. They also needed management and support of the site for a number of months before being taken inside the CITB IT infrastructure. How we responded To create a site in such to a short timeframe is always difficult—but such a short timeframe is nigh impossible. However, through strong project management, guiding the decision-making as well as creating an alternative plan should it be required, the framework of the site was initially built in two weeks to enable the newly–written content to be added. Pulling together the graphics as well as the flash elements of the site in the last week as they became ready was cutting it fine, but once again, Wrenhill delivered. This system was built on a mod-perl base with a MySQL database and an apache web server with extensions for Perl and Mason. As more sections of the site are required we can easily add new areas and elements of management to allow new content providers to add new articles and graphics directly to the site as needed as the solution is completely scalable, much to the delight of the client, supporting the future requirements of CITB/bconstructive. The client said it all at the post-launch review. Neither they, nor their IT team, actually believed us when we said that it could be achieved in time for the press launch. But it was, and it was delivered ready for action, right on time. |
