About the Coventry University

Coventry University logo Coventry University aims to provide educational opportunities to the maximum sustainable extent, through high quality teaching and research. It is a national institution with international perspectives, but it gives particular attention to the economic and social well-being of its local and regional environment. It encourages enterprise through the application of knowledge, and is founded upon moral values and principles of equality, justice and academic freedom.

What they wanted

Coventry wanted an complete enterprise-level content management solution to deal with the vast volumes of content that the had to manage from all of the schools and colleges in their charge as well as being a suitable platform to launch all manner of different services and products for the University community. The requirements ranged from full and granular security of group profiles through to offering personalised content to both individuals and groups. Usability and accessibility of content were key requirements both for contributors as well as site users as was the ability to syndicate content to other sites as well as reusing content appropriately on their Intranet, StaffNet and other Extranet systems running on Unix/Linux platforms.

How we responded

Coventry offered this as a formal tender. We were asked by our Swedish partner company, Polopoly, if we would provide any build and integration services required by the tender. This we did, and after long hours of meetings, Coventry chose the Polopoly/Wrenhill partnership from hundreds of other company solutions. Polopoly is also used by Sheffield University and is fast becoming the industry leader in Java based CMS solutions.

The timescales were short, in that the initial framework product had to be ready for August 2003, a period of just a few weeks, for all of the content to be added by the Coventry staff. With the in-house group providing graphics and html, Wrenhill built the system templates to project plan as well as providing a test system, while the Coventry IT team built the live servers assisted by our operations group. By providing a solid base, Coventry’s decision to choose Polopoly means that their platform in secure and stable and can scale to take in all of their future requirements over the next few years. But it doesn’t stop there. Wrenhill, in addition, also continue to help out the Coventry team, providing consultancy and advice as needed. One of the original intentions was that Coventry would provide the expertise in-house to build new products and services but in the event that they need extra resources and assistance at any stage, they know they have a team of experts on hand.
