About the National Autistic Society (NAS)

NAS logo The National Autistic Society (NAS) is the leading organisation representing Autism and Asperger Syndrome in the UK. The NAS exists to champion the rights and interests of all people with autism and to ensure that they and their families receive quality services, appropriate to their needs. Autism is a lifelong and complex developmental disability that affects the way a person communicates and relates to people around them. The term autistic spectrum is used because the condition varies from person to person; some people with the condition may also have accompanying learning difficulties, while others are much more able with average or above average intelligence.

What they wanted

Having just completed a major re-branding exercise, NAS needed a content-managed solution not simply to update the website, but to put leading edge technologies in place to deliver their business needs to their target audience through multiple delivery channels. But that was just the start. Through a series of initiatives from mid-2003, they needed a delivery system to cope with the huge amounts of information dealt with on a day-to-day basis. Ultimately personalised by geographic area and by individual requirements, the vision was to deliver the right information to the right individuals at the right time, from a number of different sources in a number of different formats. NAS wanted to allow information to flow back from the hundreds of volunteers into a completely brand-managed environment, as well as supporting sales and marketing channels. Fundamentally, the cohesion between any solution and its delivery partner was key to their choice.

How we responded

By providing an initial content management framework for NAS we were able to get the contributors authoring and managing site content in an extremely short timeframe. Once familiar with the product, more ideas and feedback will be forthcoming, which in turn will provide ideas and functionality for enhancements, which again can be managed in small chunks. By adding small amounts of functionality at a time, we are able to manage internal expectations and budgets as well as providing a really dynamic set of web products for the user base.

Wrenhill have significant experience of working with end users or publishers within large organisations with the aim of exploiting the content management technology selected to the best business effect. NAS is now really set-up to deliver this critical information to those who need it through the new digital channels. The public-facing site launched at the end of 2003.

In addition, Wrenhill have now written, implemented and gone live with a fully functioned e-commerce solution to give NAS what they really wanted from an on-line shop.
