About the YouthNet UK
YouthNet UK is the country’s first ‘virtual charity’ and one of the most groundbreaking national youth services, helping more than one million young people every month by providing unbiased information to enable young people to make informed choices through TheSite.org, the UK’s premier information service for young people.
TheSite is objective, impartial and ethical. We don’t tell anyone how to lead their lives - we just believe everybody should have all the information they need to make their own decisions in life. What they wanted YouthNet needed an industrial strength content management system for both TheSite and Ask-the-site products so that the relatively small editorial team became really efficient in providing content. All of the content needed to be kept secure and anonymous as well as being reusable to form poll questions and FAQ’s. In addition the partners extranet capability needed provide functionality to allow questions to be answered by professionals directly and efficiently. Finally, this had to be a completely Java & J2EE compliant solution to fit IT strategy. How we responded Originally intending to be delivered by an in-house team, Wrenhill were brought in by our partners at Polopoly to get involved with scoping the project. Having the Java capabilities in house was a great bonus to YouthNet as they would then be able to develop functionality as required. What became clear though was that the solution would need some external development firepower to deliver and in the end, the decision was taken to outsource to us. However, by working with the in-house team. We were able to provide not just a solution to immediate problem but by cross-training we were able to make them self-sufficient in the longer term. The project was not without its problems, mainly due to the short time scales of the project and some short term issues that took longer to solve than normal. The result however can be seen at www.thesite.org. A lightening fast delivery platform to provide the youth of our nation with answers to difficult questions and a place to air their views. Wrenhill are very proud to associated with YouthNet in realising their vision. |
